DEN HELDER HARBOUR REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Aerial photograph of Den Helder harbourIn the period June 2007 to July 2008, the redevelopment is set to take place of the Den Helder Outer Harbour, better known as the Nieuwediep. This project, known by the title ‘Den Helder Harbour Redevelopment Project’ is necessary in order to meet the demand placed by the offshore industry and seagoing shipping sector for more mooring and transhipment facilities. Over the last few years, Den Helder has acquired a prominent position in the supply & maintenance chain for the offshore industry. Above all the renovation of the Paleiskade, the location of the Offshore Service & Logistics Centre, has made a major contribution to the success. The supply & maintenance sector is currently undergoing considerable growth, and generates many employment opportunities. By renovating and expanding the now outdated harbour facilities alongside the Nieuwediep, service provision to the offshore industry and seagoing shipping sector can be further optimised. The entire region will then be able to harvest the economic benefits.

Three subprojects
The redevelopment project consists of the following components:
Renovation and widening of the Onderzeedienstkade quayside
Renovation and widening of the Visserijkade quayside
Construction of a mooring facility for seagoing recreation vessels

Project completion
The intention is to undertake and hand over the three components simultaneously, on the basis of a design & construct contract. Handover is planned for July 2008, shortly before the Tall Ships’ Race 2008 event, which will be held between 20 and 23 August 2008 in Den Helder.

Project funding
The Province of North Holland and the Municipality of Den Helder have made the necessary resources available for funding the project. In total, more than 13 million euro will be spent.
